| A new unique experiment in bridging the digital divide by gathering and disseminating local news in Chhattisgarhi dialects of Gondi & Kuduk & Hindi has been launched by one of the Manthan Awardees of 2008 Subhranshu Chaudhury of www.cgnet.in What happens is that Microsoft India and Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a mobile technology whereby anybody can leave their voice recordings which can be accessed by others waiting to hear the latest news. Thereby it is non dependent of literacy levels and fits to a T in the largely Indian oral society especially the tribal region of Chhattisgarh. Says Mr. Subhranshu Choudhury of www.cgnet.in, in The Hindu “Now people can dial 080-66932500 and there are options to either record a news story or to listen to a news bulletin. In the first phase there are only Hindi news stories, but we are planning to expand it to include the Gondi and Kuduk dialects by the end of the one-year fellowship period.” |
